Vancouver Folk Music Festival 2012

Jericho Park Beach July 14-16   

This was the 35th year for the festival at Jericho Park Beach. The weather was pretty good for most of it and the line up was impressive. There was a strong Canadian component on the list of performers. Dan Mangan, Hey Rossetta, and K’naan are just a few that took to the main stage. Here are a few photos.

Murray McLauclan

Murray McLauchlin 2012 Folk Fest

Murray McLauchlan’s first album, Song from the Street, appeared in 1971, and in late 2011 he released Human Writes, his Twenty-fourth album.

Serena Ryder on the main stage

Serena Ryder is a Juno Award-winning performer originally from Ontario and released It’s OK in 2008 and her album of covers If Memory Serves Well in 2006. Her performance here was just a few months prior to her 2012 release of Harmony and saw her star rise with the huge success of “Stompa.”

Lucinda Williams

A unique voice, Lucinda Williams blends country, folk, blues, and rock with her own deep, well-traveled, old-soul singing. Blessed was released in 2011 and featured guests Elvis Costello and Mathew Sweet.

Martyn Joseph

Welsh Celtic-folk artist Martyn Joseph has been performing for almost thirty years and tours Canada often. He has over 30 recordings and has a wonderful s baritone guitar that he used during his performance.

 

Ani DiFranco

Ani DiFranco is based in New York and tours regularly.  In January 2012 she released her 17th studio album, Which Side are you On? covering the Pete Seeger classic with him playing banjo.

Dala

Sheila Carabine & Amanda Walther are from Ontario where they started performing together in high school in 2002. They have won a Juno and two Canadian Folk Music Awards. In 2012 they were nominated for two Canadian Folk Music Awards – Best Vocal Group and Best English Song Writer, for their album Best Day. Mike Roth was nominated for Best Producer of the Year, for the album.

Chatham County Line

From North Carolina, this bluegrass group released their sixth album in July 2012 titled, Sight and Sound.

Marley’s Ghost

Marley’s Ghost is based in California but with Nashville roots. They blend all forms of roots music that result in a unique Americana sound. Their first album, Haunting Melodies, was released in 1987 — they’ve been around for a while.

Alejandra Robles Suastegui

A dancer and musician, Alejandra Robles Suastegui performs traditional Latin American material with special attention to her Mexican roots.

Mike Farris and the Cumberland Saints

Originating from Nashville Tennessee, Mike Farris and the Cumberland Saints perform gospel blues.

The night sky approaches

Cedric Watson et Bijou Creole

Louisiana based Cedric Watson et Bijou Créole brings together the rich history of African and Caribbean sounds along with European influences that are at the foundation of Creole culture and Zydeco music. And they do it in their own special way.

River City Extension

This Eight-piece band features trumpet, violin, mandolin, guitar, drums, and cello to create a variety of sounds that range from folk to punk and most steps in between. It is the proverbial mixed bag.  The Unmistakable Man was released in 2010.*

*The band called it quits in 2015.
